Mumbai : Renowned Bollywood actor Dharmendra turned 87 today. Born on 08 December 1935 in Phagwara, Punjab, Dharmendra was inclined towards films since childhood and wanted to become an actor. In the year 1958, Filmfare, the famous magazine of the film industry, took out an advertisement, in which new faces were offered to work as actors.
Dharmendra was very happy after reading this advertisement and left the job of American Tubebell and came to Mayanagari Mumbai to make his dreams come true. During this, Dharmendra met producer-director Arjun Higorani, who recognized Dharmendra’s talent and gave him an opportunity to work as an actor in his film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere.
After the failure of the film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, Dharmendra worked in many superhit films like Anpadhe with Mala Sinha, Pooja Ke Phool, Bandini with Nutan, Kajal with Meena Kumari. These films were liked by the audience but the credit of success was given to the actresses of the film instead of Dharmendra. After the success of the film Phool Aur Patthar released in the year 1966, Dharmendra was successful in making his mark as an actor in true sense.
Due to his strong performance in the film, he was also nominated for the Filmfare Best Actor Award. Producer-director Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films have been instrumental in giving Dharmendra initial success. These include films like Anupama, Manjali Didi and Satyakam. After the success of Phool Aur Patthar, Dharmendra’s image became that of Heeman. After this film, the producer-directors capitalized on Dharmendra’s Heman image in most of the films.
