Hardik Pandya named captain of T20I squad against Sri Lanka; Rishabh Pant is not part of the squad

The transition phase in Indian cricket kicks off on December 27, 2022 with leading all-rounder Hardik Pandya appointed as the captain of the T20 side for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka starting January 3.

The 27-year-old Baroda man has also been named as vice-captain of the ODI squad, signaling the current regime’s plan to see him as the long-term leader of the white ball when 35-year-old Rohit Sharma decides to called time on his illustrious international career.

While Rohit, who is recovering from a finger injury has been named captain of the ODI series that will follow the T20Is, it is understood that the shortest format will now feature fresh faces and mainly IPL performers.

Even Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are also not part of the T20I format and there are indications that the duo along with Rohit may not be picked again with the 2024 T20 World Cup in mind.

The troika will probably be asked to focus on the 50-over format with the World Cup set to be played in India next year.

“Yes, there is no official announcement that Rohit has been dropped from the T20I captaincy but he along with Kohli and Rahul will be dropped from the format. Obviously, Rohit’s dislocated thumb injury is yet to fully heal though he has started training . But the phasing out has already started,” a senior BCCI source privy to development told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Suryakumar Yadav, for his mindblowing one year, is now the new vice-captain in T20Is.

Pandya, who led Gujarat Titans to IPL victory in the last edition was tipped as Rohit’s replacement after India lost to England in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup playing archaic cricket.

While Rohit is still recovering from the thumb dislocation, BCCI’s press release did not say whether this is a permanent change or just for one series.

The T20I team has a new look with two uncapped pacers Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar fielded in the shortest format.

Mavi was picked by Titans for ₹6 crore, while Bengal’s Mukesh was picked up by Delhi Capitals for ₹5.50 crore.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rahul Tripathi, two powerhouse IPL performers, made it to the T20 side.

The ODI side boasts a more experienced look with Mohammed Shami returning from a shoulder injury.

Rishabh Pant leads for NCA

Rishabh Pant was not part of both the white-ball squads and is understood to have been asked to report to the NCA for a knee-strengthening rehabilitation program for two weeks. Hence, he will miss the entire Sri Lanka series.

But the BCCI statement did not mention whether he was rested or dropped.

End of the road for Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan, one of India’s contemporary white-ball greats, may have played his last match for the country after a prolonged bad patch that ruled him out of the national ODI set-up.

Ironically, even a series before Bangladesh, he was leading the side in New Zealand but his dismal decline in scoring rate and also not being able to string together a series of consistent scores worked against him.

Rohit a white-ball giant and Shubman Gill in prime ODI form with Ishan Kishan hitting the fastest double hundred in less than a month, India have plenty of options and could look beyond Dhawan.

As reported by PTI on December 11, Dhawan is now predicted to be dropped and it could be the end of the road for a star performer for India in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy and 2015 World Cup, where he was the top scorer.
